Category: Zone BBS Suggestions and Feedback
Hi folks. I wasn't sure whether to put this topic on the Rant board or Zone suggestions, board. I've never liked the maximum limits, since the User Name change feature came in to effect. After all, no other website has this stupid maximum change limit. For a premium member like myself, you can change your user name twice, that's your lot. If you are a Standard member, you can only change it once, and that's your lot. Furthermore, the space you have to write a really eye-catching or classy user name, it has to be really short, as I found out, far too late, when I changed it just now. For the moment, unless the limit is either taken away completely or it is raised to something like five or ten changes for premium members and between three to five changes for Standard members, my user name is stuck the way it is, and no way am I satisfied with it. So, should the Maximum Change limit for user names, stay as it is? be abandoned and taken off The Zone completely? or should the maximum number of changes be raised to three, five or ten, so you can go back and fix/correct a deffective or mis-spelled user name? I'm all for raising the change limit or even scrapping the limit altogether myself.
Recently they changed the limit and every time somebody is buying a new membership they get one more username change.
I had two, i used one and in the Summer after i renewed my premium membership i got another one so i have got two again.
Maybe we should have a 10 minutes chance of editing the username when we change it. If we don't make any chages it will lock to the username we chose. That would give the oportunity to fix mistakes.
No, forget the ten-minute limit. Forget any blimming limits, I say. They're nothing but trouble.
I would think it would get pretty confusing if people had unlimited name changes. People would change them as often as they change their log in messages or maybe even more frequently. But I think in your case, since you obviously didn't know there was a character limit and made your user name too long, you could probably send a PM or e-mail to one of the admins and maybe get special permision to change your name again.
Don't think we're raising the limit any time, but we'll give you another one. Apparently, the username change box allows for 50 characters but usernames only can be up to 25. Will fix this. For more, you can edit your board title, if you are premium.
Ah! That would explain why it show properly and now looks and sounds bloody stupid.
I actually like things as they currently are. In special cases such as yours, where a genuine mistake has occurred then yes it is quite fair to ask for an extra change but I completely agree with Becky though. If we give lots of user name changes then we'd never know who we were talking too. One difference that you need to take into account when comparing this site to many others is that really, it is a very small community. Giving lots of name changes in a place like this would leed to mayhem, financial melt down and ultimately complete global collapse. The universe would implode and all because nobody knew who anybody else was anymore.
Oops, anyway, back from my flight of fancy. I'm definitely not in favor of changing things.
Just on a side note, any user name that stretches over 25 characters is ludicrously long. We're not discussing that I know but I still vote no no no.
Thanks. Dan.
Hmmm! In that case, if I was allowed just one more change, I'd shorten it to Dumbledoresgirl, but come on Dan, what about profiles? What are they there for? A. so Zoners can find out all about each other and pick friends for their own little groups and circles, so, as long as the users told us their christian names and everything in the description field, that's how to keep track of them. I'll never be happy with the maximum change limit on here, and there's absolutely no sensible or earthly reason to have this limit.
I agree with Dan on this. And if you have read many profiles, you will see that many people don't bother writing anything about themselves, let alone their names.
Since the name change feature was introduced we've had 299 users make a total of 346 name changes. Now people have managed to make that many alterations with limited numbers of name changes. Just imagine what it would be like if people could pretty much change their names on a daily bases! It would be crazy. Yes I realize that you can check on this stuff in profiles, but frankly I don't want to have to check a profile everytime somebody talks to me, just to see if it is somebody that I already know.
Now given that 299 users is a lot more than the number of users that regularly log in here I think it safe to assume that giving unlimited name changes would leed to serious confusion, not to mention all the bitching it would cause because people would be able to put very offensive things in there names knowing full well they could change them immediately if necessary.
Even if we gave a limited number of changes, say 10 which was a number I believe you quoted higher up this thread, That spread over 299 users would be one hell of a lot of keeping up one would have to do.
They're good reasons. You might not like them but they're good reasons. If you doubt the numbers that I've quoted by the way then feel free to check for yourself. A complete list of name changes is available from the statistics page.
Thanks. Dan.
